World SuperYacht Awards win for Malahne

G.L. Watson & Co. are proud to announce that our recent project, the 1937 Camper & Nicholsons-designed Malahne, has been awarded “Best Rebuild” at the 2016 World SuperYacht Awards. Attended by the elite of the yachting industry, the World Superyacht Awards recognise the ingenuity and innovation demanded by the design, engineering and construction of the world’s finest luxury yachts.

Managing Director, Dr William Collier recalls the day he first saw Malahne in 1988, “I still remember my sense of shock. Here, at last, was one of Charles E. Nicholson’s masterpieces, but as Adel she no longer looked anything like the graceful yacht her designer had intended.”

The project would be audacious, but for the firm behind the restoration of classic yachts such as Nahlin and World SuperYacht Awards winner Blue Bird the vision was clear.

In the autumn of 2012 we led the recovery of Malahne, bringing her back to Pendennis, where she was to under-go one of the most extensive restorations yet seen.

Our careful study of archival material combined with our detailed knowledge of Camper & Nicholsons yachts enabled us to produce an Exterior Design for the restoration, which at once respected Malahne’s original appearance and detailing, whilst ensuring compatibility with modern requirements and regulations.

We also designed Malahne’s Crew & Service interior and Wheelhouse using the same joinery detailing that had graced her in 1937. As a final touch we also designed a beautiful mahogany 35 knot Owner’s Launch in contemporary style.

As joint Owner’s Representative with Edmiston & Co. we took responsibility for the specification and on-site management with particular focus on Exterior and Interior Outfitting, where we worked with the talented teams of craftsmen from Pendennis and De Ruiter to ensure that our designs, and those of Oliver Laws, were executed to the highest quality.

Antony Harrison, Director of G.L. Watson & Co. said, “We are extremely pleased that Malahne has been awarded Best Refit at the World SuperYacht Awards, it is a testament to the creativity and dedication of everyone who worked on this project”.
